Moving for good causes
Or philanthropic exercise
- Looking for a way to keep your body moving?
- Wanting to contribute to the community?
- Can't see how to fit all this into a busy schedule?
Why not combine the two by moving your body for charity? Take part in fundraising events that ask you to walk, jog, run, swim, cycle, play golf, dance ..

If being generous and making a local contribution is what helps you engage with life and give you a sense of making a difference, then this could be a strategy that suits you and your family, your workplace, your organisation.
- By involving the whole family you model good citizen practices.
- By involving your friends you help give them a sense of contributing.
- By involving your workplace you model teamwork, employer of choice practices, and foster wellbeing.
- By just going yourself, you develop a novel wellbeing strategy for this year.
Your Moving for good causes Strategy
1. Choose your preferred method of moving - walking, cycling, dancing, golf etc
2. Check through the list and search other good causes to identify a program of events.
The list below is not exhaustive and is Canberra-focused, so keep a look out for your local:
- Fun Runs/Walk/Job
- Charity sporting days
- Fundraising balls
3. Work out how you will prepare for these events.
Make sure you prepare well. Look for Training Tips on web sites. Some events, such as the Canberra Times Fun Run, are supported by training programs. Also visit:
Step Into Life at www.stepintolife.com.au.
4. Commit to your program. Put the dates of the events, registration deadlines, training programs in your diary.
5. Stay committed. Ask yourself these questions:
- What outcome do I want from this program? Do you want to take part in a number of events? Raise a dollar target? Complement your exercise program? Set yourself a personal best target in terms of time, distance?
- Why do I want it? What will it give me? (write as many compelling reasons as you can think of)
- Are there any obstacles? How do I deal with them?
- What's my action plan?
Invitation to charities
