The 'B' factor of fitnessProfessionals in the fitness industry need to consider the 'B' factor. The 'B' factor refers to the beliefs people hold that can either expand their sense of what is possible or hold them back from having a go. A classic belief that can get in the way of clients gaining the most from their fitness program is 'I can't'. I can't lift that weight, I can't move like that, I can't come more than once a week. These statements of belief can be linked with some beaut reasons: I can't because I'm uncoordinated, I'm too busy, fellas don't do that. Until the 'B' factor is addressed, chances of significant progress are slim. If a person believes they can't do something, then they can't, despite all the evidence to the contrary. Professionals need skills to address these beliefs by asking questions that unearth people's beliefs, and by offering options to test beliefs in a non-threatening way. I invite you to consider how beliefs are affecting both you and your clients and what role you're playing to take account of the 'B' factor. First produced for Fitness ACT Newsletter, based on my presentation to the Fitness ACT Awards Dinner 2002 Dr Ann Villiers, learning guide, professional speaker and author, is Australia 's only Mental Nutritionist specialising in mind and language practices that help people build flexible thinking, confident speaking and quality connections with people.
