New resource for women in business The ACT Chamber of Women in Business recently launched the Women's Business Information Resource (WBIR), a business portal for people building a business in the Capital Region. Located at www.cwb.org.au/wbir, WBIR directs visitors to the following information: A snapshot of the Canberra social and business environment The snapshot is designed to give newcomers the general flavour of life in Canberra. Complementing ACT Government efforts to attract skilled labour, WBIR helps people understand the business environment and provides the main web sites for answering lifestyle issues concerning education, sport and recreation, and the arts. Where to find out about business events Several event calendars are listed to save people time in tracking down business events in the region. Sources of advice for small and home-based businesses As many women operate micro and home-based businesses in the ACT, this section directs visitors to information, resources and associations that cater for this business sector. Help and resources available from governments Visitors are directed to key web sites and business portals provided by the ACT, NSW and Australian Governments. Business and women's organisations Joining with like-minded people is one way to avoid isolation. Membership also gives access to professional development, business knowledge, role models and mentors. WBIR lists key organisations catering for women's needs as well as where to find more comprehensive lists. The main business organisations are listed so people can assess which are likely to best cater for their needs. Information about networking opportunities Networking is a valuable way to become known and build referrals. The Canberra Region has an abundance of networking opportunities. WBIR lists women-only functions as well as events offered by business and professional associations.
