Mental Nutrition Thinking flexibly. Speaking confidently Dr Ann Villiers

Women & Confidence

So,what is a Daring Dame?

When we think of someone who's daring what words come to mind? Maybe we think of someone who's adventurous, bold, brave, courageous, plucky. A person who has grit, guts, nerve. Such a person seems sure of themselves, self-reliant. In short, they're confident. They are not timid, risk-averse, hesitant or self-doubting.

Yet describing people in this way suggests we can only be in one camp or the other. We're either brave or we're a coward. We're either certain or we're unsure. When we think about our own situation though, we can think of situations when we are bold, gutsy and sure. And we can think of other times when we feel timid, insecure and anxious. Our lives are more like colourful licorice all-sorts than a bar of milk chocolate.

A Daring Dame is a girl or woman who expresses her bountiful talents, chooses to define who she is, doesn't wait, builds strength from within, is influential, and has a keen sense of the possible. She is a work in progress, forever evolving. In short, she taps the powerful resource sitting between her ears-how she makes sense of her world.

A Daring Dame:

      • is a confident woman who takes courageous steps, on her terms.
      • steps forward, speaks up, knows where she's going.
      • practices mindfulness and makes wise choices.
      • takes responsibility for how she interprets what goes on in her life and for her own well-being.
      • is willing to have a go.
      • believes that her resources are unlimited and that she deserves abundance.
      • sees herself as a dynamic, successful human being on her terms.
      • has fun, is adventurous and creative, and laughs a lot.
      • is committed to growing, learning, stretching her boundaries.

Above all, she reaches-she reaches up, out, over and around.

We can all be Daring Dames. When we need to take on something new or deal with some challenge, we have the resources inside us.

Too many women are held back from being all they could be, for want of a little daring. What's needed is a dash of clarity about what to do, confidence in themselves, and courage to take the necessary steps. Spiced with this daring, more women will speak their mind, take the job they really want, accept leadership nominations, say 'No' when they want to, try something new, step outside the borders of convention and other people's wishes, change the beliefs that limit their capabilities, and say 'I can' rather than 'I can't'. In short, they'll be a Daring Dame.

And the world needs more Daring Dames. Women who are willing to step forward, rock the boat, have a say, take a lead.

But isn't 'dame' out of date?

Originally the word dame referred to a woman of power, rank and status. Over time, it lost this meaning and became associated with women of insignificant power. I'm rehabilitating the word to reflect more of its origins. However, if Daring Dame doesn't appeal, you can choose one of these: Gutsy Girl (only if you are under 18), Wild Woman, Bold Babe, Daring Diva, Marvelous Matriarch, Adventurous Amazon, Dynamic Donna.

Gorgeous Daring Dames

I wrote Gorgeous Daring Dames, How to grow in confidence, clarity & commitment to capture ideas for building confidence and courage. The book grew out of a workshop called a Den for Daring Dames. Women in a variety of places, including Yass, Condobolin, Cowra and Canberra , have attended this one day workshop.

Profiling sixteen women from the national capital region, ranging in age from teenagers to sexagenarians, this book focuses on the beliefs that enable us to take charge, tackle challenges and make things happen. We don't have to be superwomen, climbing to the top of the corporate pole or sailing solo around the world. Each of us has bountiful talent waiting to be expressed-and an untapped powerful resource sitting between our ears!

Written from a Mental Nutrition® perspective, the book shows how we make sense of experiences and happenings, and how the beliefs we form affect our behaviour. For women, this process is critical when it comes to enhancing or undermining our confidence in areas like speaking up, health and wellbeing, and finances.

Here's some of the practical know-how you'll find in this book:

      • the three ingredients of Mental Nutrition® & how we make sense of what happens
      • a guide to building clarity about who you are and where you're heading
      • how to build personal confidence & reduce fears that get in the way
      • why words are powerful & how to use language boldly
      • tips on asking, saying No, handling criticism & talking about your strengths
      • how to dissect what money means to you & then take charge of your finances
      • over 20 ideas for building your wellbeing
      • finding the support you need
      • taking care of your gorgeous body!
